Dato’ Mat Amir Bin Jaffar is a former Ambassador and a former Independent Non-Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank. He currently sits on the Board of IIUM Holdings Sdn. Bhd. A wholly owned subsidiary company of the International Islamic University of Malaysia and manages Fugro Geos Sdn, Bhd, as its Chairman. Since August 2006, he also reads at the Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaysia as its Senior Research Fellow (Visiting).
He graduated in 1966 from the University of Malaya with B.A, (Hons) and served as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer in Wisma Putra until his retirement in early 2001.
During his successful 35-year career in the Foreign Service, he had served in Tokyo, Vienna, Geneva, Singapore, and helped to establish the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka. He was then appointed as the Under Secretary to assist in the peace process in Kampuchea based on the cooperation amongst the ASEAN countries.
Between 1984 and early 2001, he was appointed as Ambassador and High Commissioner to five countries consecutively: first, to Myanmar, and then to India, Germany, China, and finally to United Kingdom. By virtue of these Ambassadorial appointments, he was also then concurrently accredited to Nepal, Switzerland, North Korea, and Republic of Ireland.
He had also served as a member of the Malaysian delegation to a number of international conferences: refugee conference, commodity conferences, UNCTAD IV, UN 7th Special Session, ASEAN Ministerial meetings, and the Non-Aligned Summit 1986. He retired from Government Service in early 2001.
He was awarded the Jasa Setia Mahkota by the Yang di Pertuan Agong in 1989 and the Dato Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) by HRH Sultan of Selangor, 1997.
